Conducting Audience Research

In order to achieve 'Excellent' research into a potential audience target the following things have to be demonstrated:

1. Who your audience might be (demographics)

2. What types of media they currently engage with (films, TV shows, music etc)

3. Why they like those films/media (audience pleasures)

4. What they think of your opening sequence idea.

5. How your findings for the above 4 questions will influence your own production... how you will cater to your audience’s needs/desires?

Question I may ask include:

What is your name and age?

What is your favourite genre and why?

What is your most memorable opening sequence to a film and why?

What would you like to see in our opening sequence?

What do you think of the summary given to you about our opening sequence?

Conducting our audience research:

For our audience research we used 5 people and asked the questions listed above,

    Opening Sequence Analysis Tears

For my first analysis of an opening sequence I have chosen tears (2006)

This opening sequence straight away establishes the genre by the music being played; the fast picking of stringed instruments works with the drums and a softer violin layered on top to create a well known horror theme tune. Whilst this is being played the credits are shown, each with an echo of the lettering and drops of tears dropping. There is a black background, this stays black but changes to different images, all still black but unrecognisable and unknown to the audience, this shows darkness and additionally could reveal the fear that is associated with most horror films. This is then contrasted with the credits in pure white writing, the idea of coldness and isolation are represented by this colour, which although is an opposite of the representation of black it is still another associated theme related to horror films. The credits are followed by a pitch black screen.

The first character introduced is a young girl, she is seen through a gap in a tree swinging on a string held swing alone, almost as if someone is spying on her. This is a typical horror themed movie scene, as it immediately leaves questions as to why she is alone and why she is there and also what is to happen next.

No dialogue is said but through the use of sound effects (non-diegetic sound), such as when the pale lady who is seen to have committed suicide swings by, there is a loud sound created to frighten the audience watching. The string which hangs the lady is being untied by itself which is a supernatural occurrence, it gives the impression that something is about to occur. The lady is then seen to walk towards the girl this is done using a medium shot, at which point a blip appears on the screen and the little girl is gone, a single heart beat can be heard this emphasises the fear being created within this scene, at the point where she disappears there is a fast scream, followed by a long shot of the lady walking through a forest scene. The twitching movement of this image is another way in which this opening sequence has established the genre well. This creates a hook which

Not only drags the audience in but also leaves them wanting to watch more.

Tears was released in 2006 In USA, The genre is Horror/Mystery

    Production companies include:

    ·  Bermuda Triangle Entertainment

    ·  Quest Beyond Films

    ·  Quest Beyond dFX Studios

    Distribution by: Bermuda Triangle Entertainment

    Preliminary Task

The preliminary task involved a continuity task filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character. They then exchanged a couple of lines of dialogue. We filmed it in a classroom, as it was easily accessible and suitable for the task.

*It should demonstrate match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

    Coursework Introduction

    WHAT MAKES A GOOD INTRO?

    • It has to entice the audience to apply their full concentration to fully enjoy the film
    • The intro should show the Genre/ gist of the film
    • The narrative, mood ,tone and atmosphere must be set (in order to grab the attention of the audience)
    • It must not show the entire film in the 2 minutes available (dont give it all away)
